Maruti, GM, Bajaj gear-up for another car price hike in India

The auto biggies in India are gearing-up for another round of price hike in the country in a bid to level the mounting pressure from rising cost of input materials such as steel and tyres. The auto makers like General Motors, Maruti Suzuki, Tata Motors, Toyota Kirloskar, Ashok Leyland and Bajaj Auto are mulling over to increase the price of their respective vehicles in India.

We should mention here that this is the fourth time in the year 2010 when car prices are going to be increased in the Indian market. The industry, first witnessed the price hike in January due to the increasing raw material cost, following another increase in price in March and April due to an increase of 2% in the excise duty and implementation of new BS-IV emission norms, respectively.




The price of raw materials like steel and rubber has increased sharply in India in the last few months. As most of the car makers source steel from foreign markets, its price surges with the weakening currency. During the period of April-May 2010, the price of steel and rubber has increased by more than 20 to 25% due to whooping demand and increase in the rate of coking coal.

According to Mr Mayank Pareek, Maruti Suzuki India's Managing Executive Officer (Marketing and Sales), the raw material prices are increasing day-by-day and which is pressurizing the margins of the company, He added that the company is in the process of finalizing its contracts with its suppliers and any decision on the price increase will be taken after that.

General Motors India has already indicated that it is planning to increase the price of its cars in India by 2 to 3 percent from the 1st of July. The company will be increasing prices across all eight models, by 2-3 per cent to offset rising input costs, said company's vice-president Balendran.

Maruti attempts to save its dwindling market share

Maruti Suzuki India Ltd. (MSIL), the country's largest car maker which accounts for the sales of every second car in the country, will be facing a tough year ahead as an array of new entrants have endangered its long standing dominance in the compact-car segment. Mr Osama Suzuki, the head of the Japan based leading car maker Suzuki Motors, had told the media at the Delhi auto Expo in January that, 2010 will be a tough year for the company in India owing to the slew of new car launches.

However, the company is working aggressively on its plans to defend its market share of more than 50%, in India. MSIL has recently launched new Maruti wagon R in the Indian market with its latest K-Series engine, to maintain its competitiveness against a number of new entrants like Chevrolet Beat, Ford Figo and Volkswagen polo.




Moreover, the company is planning to roll-out a new and upgraded Maruti Swift in the Indian market by the first quarter of 2011. The new Swift will be equipped with a basket full of additional features along with a fully-revamped interior. With this, the new Swift will be manufactured with high quality steel which will ensure the maximum safety of the passengers.

The company has also decided to set-up stock-yards for its cars in different parts of the country so that the waiting period for these cars can be brought down. Maruti's popular cars in India including premium hatchback Swift, entry level sedan Swift Dzire and recently rolled out MPV Eeco have a waiting period of as much as 4 months. Maruti Wagon R, one of the best selling compact cars in India, is all set to be rolled-out in a CNG version in the country by the end of next quarter. It is expected that the Indian auto giant Maruti Suzuki will price this new CNG version of Wagon R about Rs 70,000 higher than the existing petrol versions. The company has been working on CNG technology for the last two years which is almost ready, as per a statement given by Mr IV Rao, Maruti Suzuki's managing executive officer (engineering). The company had showcased this technology at the Delhi Auto Expo in January this year, he added.



We should mention here, that Maruti Suzuki India has recently launched Wagon R in a new avatar along with a K-series engine so that it can take on the new entrants of this segment like Chevrolet Beat and Ford Figo. Besides Maruti Wagon R, some other popular cars of the company in India such as Alto, Estilo and SX4 are also expected to be launched with a CNG system.



The new CNG versions of these popular cars will be rolled-out with factory fitted CNG-fired engines, unlike other petrol cars in India that come equipped with retro-fitted CNG kits. Maruti to establish new car stock-yards in India

Maruti Suzuki India, which is struggling with mounting order backlog for many of its best-selling cars in the country, has now decided to set-up stock-yards for its vehicles in different parts of the country so that the waiting period for these cars can be brought down. The company has already started the land acquisition process and first such kind of stockyard will be established in Bangalore by the end of this year. The company has planned a heavy investment of Rs 200 crore for the establishment of these stockyards (model showrooms) in the Indian market.



Maruti is intending to establish at least one stockyard in each of the four zones, North, South, East and West. This kind of concept is important for a large country like India and will reduce the waiting period for the customers, as per a statement given by a company official to a leading news daily.



The popular Maruti cars in India like premium hatchback Swift, entry level sedan Swift Dzire and recently launched MPV Eeco have been enjoying a waiting period as high as 4 months. Now, as company is finding it very difficult to catch-up with this rising demand, its rivals in the domestic market like Ford India and GM India, are looking to eat into a large number of Maruti's prospective buyers who are not willing to wait for that long.

Volkswagen Up! might come with Maruti's 1.0L K- Series engine

Volkswagen Up!, a popular compact car which will be rolled-out in the Indian market by the end of year 2011, is speculated to be powered with Maruti's 1.0L K-series engine. The UP! model will be priced lower than the company's recently launched hatchback Polo in India. At present, the company is considering two version of this model for the Indian market including a 3.45m long three door hatchback and a five door version.



If the rumors in the market to be believed, the India bound Volkswagen Up! will be equipped with a 1.2L TDi, which already powers the Polo model in the country. The engine will be capable of producing a maximum power of 50bhp along with a commendable CO2 emission level of 80g/km.



However, for the time being the company may borrow locally produced 1.0L K-Series engines from Maruti Suzuki as the localization of a new engines may take both time and resources. Currently, many popular Maruti cars in India come powered with this latest 1.0L K-series engine including A-Star, WagonR and Zen Estilo. The company is aiming to manufacture about 6,00,000 units of this car globally including a mini MPV based on the Up! which is expected to hit the market by year 2013.

Maruti to go greener in India with new CNG cars

Maruti Suzuki India, the largest car maker in the country, is all set to go greener in its domestic market with the launch of new CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) versions of some of its most popular cars in India including Maruti Alto, Maruti Wagon R and Maruti SX4 by the end of this year. At the time when almost all major car makers around the world are searching for ways to produce environment-friendly vehicles equipped with greener technologies, Maruti's move will be seen as a step ahead in this direction.



The new CNG versions of these popular cars will be rolled-out with factory fitted CNG-fired engines, unlike other petrol cars in India that come equipped with retro-fitted CNG kits. It is expected that the company will price these new CNG versions at a premium of up to 20 percent. According to Mr IV Rao, Maruti Suzuki's managing executive officer (engineering), the move of launching new CNG-run cars is company's answer to green technology that will also be the most fuel-efficient auto fuel in India, blending the benefits of gasoline engine power at the cost of CNG.

Mr Rao added that it would be the first time, the company is going to use factory-fitted computer controlled gas distribution system that will comprise of injectors to fire gas directly into engine eliminating any loss of power. The company will import these injectors from the US market in a bid to keep the cost of these new CNG-versions as low as possible. Maruti India has been using a domestically developed i-GPI (intelligent gas port injection) technology in its CNG versions that will enable the user to choose either petrol or CNG as fuel.

Most of the CNG-run cars in India come powered with venturi type CNG technology including Hyundai Accent, Chevrolet Spark and Toyota’s Innova. The venturi type CNG kit causes a power loss of about 15% when a user drives the car on CNG fuel.

New market hunt by Maruti, Hyundai

Maruti and Hyundai, the leading auto makers of the country, are hunting for new export markets to make up the loss incurred by currency fluctuation (euro) and withdrawal of key incentives by European countries. Both the auto makers registered huge looses due to the above mentioned factors in the current year.

Maruti experienced fall in export target to Euro zone, 80 per cent of overseas income comes through this zone, by 5 per cent to 1.4 lakh units for the year ending March 2011 as against the previous year while Hyundai's experience remained the same, as the company lost 2.3 per cent of export volumes in May, 2010 compared to the corresponding period.

The losses made the companies to search for new destinations. Hyundai, Director, Marketing and sales, Arvind Saxena told that the company is looking forward to Australia, South Africa, West Asia and Vietnam as potential market places;however, they are not as good as Euro zone if compare. On the other hand, Maruti is mulling over to consider Brunei, Taiwan, Algeria, Hong Kong, and Chile and South Africa. Apart from that the company is planning to deal more in dollar that has been more stable than euro in the last one year.

It is to be noted that car exports increased 33 per cent to 4.46 lakh units in the end of FY 2010. Whereas the exports growth in first two months of the current fiscal was 20 per cent year-on-year.

Maruti Dealership network to expand by 200

Maruti Suzuki, country's leading car maker is planning to expand its existing dealership network by opening up 200 more outlets. The step would be in reciprocation to an increased demand in the automobile sector. Shashank Srivastava, company's Chief General Manager (Marketing) said that Maruti Suzuki currently has 800 outlets that cover more than 500 cities.



He clarified that the company wants to escalate the number of outlets to at least a 1000 by the end of this fiscal. Apart from the expansion plans in terms of dealership network, the company is also looking forward to betting big on the Indian Rural market. Shrivastava said that the company has managed to rope good sales from the segment last year. He added that nearly 17% of the sales for the company were garnered from the rural segment.

With the right marketing policies taking charge of the segment at the right time, there is a lot that the company can look forward to. He said that Maruti Suzuki India is also going to place big bets on the Corporate Sector as the sector has been gaining momentum in the recent past and is expected to perform big time this fiscal.

Maruti Ritz and Zen Estilo’s CNG versions

Maruti Ritz and Zen Estilo models of Maruti Suzuki will soon be seen in their CNG versions. These new CNG versions will be available soon. The one and the only Maruti passenger vehicle with CNG technology is the Alto. In fact Maruti wants to have good share in the CNG vehicle segment. This CNG segment has the possibilities of a rapid growth. The Maruti Ritz has been showing good results for its sales and may be the CNG version will even strengthen the current position. On the other hand, the Estilo which will also be seen with the CNG version has got less possibilities of any improvement in its sales or anything.



The company will actually analyse the response of its models through the new CNG versions. So that it can do similar changes to its other models. Now this whole plan depends on the response to the Maruti Ritz and Estilo CNG.



At present the CNG stations are available only at few places like Mumbai, Delhi and Gujarat. But it has been said that few more CNG filling stations would soon be installed at some major metros, very soon, in the coming months.

Maruti Zen Estilo Elite - Only for Maharashtra

The Maruti Zen Estilo model is quite similar to the old Suzuki MR Wagon. The MR Wagon was discontinued in 2006 internationally. It is worth mentioning here that Maruti Suzuki actually launched this car in India when it was discontinued internationally. Maruti Zen Estilo has actually been introduced so that the early successful Zen can be replaced. The VXI version of the Maruti Zen Estilo ‘Elite’ has also been equipped with a Bluetooth enabled music system. The best feature of this model is its KB-series engine. And now comes the most interesting part. Well..this unique Maruti Zen Estilo ‘Elite’ will be exclusively for Maharashtra. Elite’s Estilo has no price hikes. Maruti is offering quite good features with Elite but still the deal won’t be so good!

New Maruti Swift 2011 Unveiled

Suzuki Motor Corporation has started the production of its new Swift model in Hungary. It has been announced that the company finished a full model change with the Swift. The company’s Hungarian subsidiary, Magyar Suzuki, started producing the new Swift on 10 June, 2010. A great event was held to mark this occasion and it was attended by many eminent personalities. The older version of the car is available in the Indian auto market too whom people known as Maruti Swift. The new version of Swift is likely to come to India too.



The all new Maruti Suzuki Swift is the latest world strategic model from Suzuki and the model flaunts features like styling, driving performance, impact safety, quality and improved fuel consumption. The lower emissions are also there in this model. A higher strength steel has been used in this model which makes the total car body lighter yet stiffer than before. The underbody design has gone through improvement. The new Maruti Swift has got a 1.2-litre petrol engine which is equipped with Dual VVT (Variable intake and exhaust valve timing) and produces 94PS at 6,000rpm. The improved torque is developed to 118Nm at 4,800rpm. The model is also available in D13A 1.3-litre diesel engine.



The company is planning to launch the Magyar Suzuki-produced new Swift in Hungary in coming autumn. In the coming time, The company is planning to launch this new model in Germany, the United Kingdom, Italy, and other European countries. The new Maruti Swift has got larger wheels and lower profile tyres. This provides better handling and safety. The interior of the car has got a more dynamic feel now. Black is the keytone colour this time and there are accents of silver. The model has also grown a bit in length.

New Maruti Alto likely to be powered with 1.0L K-series engine

Maruti India, the country's largest car maker is expected to launch a new version of its best selling small car Maruti Alto in the Indian market fitted with its new generation K-series engine. Mr RC Bhargava, Maruti Suzuki India Chairman, had indicated a few days back that Maruti Alto needs a face-lift as it has been in the Indian market for a long time. However, there is no announcement from the company's side regarding the launch date and specifications of this new Alto in this domestic market.

Maruti has already started delivering the BS-IV compatible version of its best-selling Alto in India, powered with the same 796cc MPFI 3-cylinder gasoline engine. No major changes have been made in the BS-IV compatible Alto, besides the addition of new integrated headrests in the interiors. Same as before, this Alto is available in three variants including LX, LXI and STD, in the price range of Rs. 2.2- Rs. 2.7 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi).

At present, the Maruti Suzuki offers two type of the K-series engines in the Indian market including a 998cc, 3-cylinder engine (fitted in Maruti's latest offerings Maruti A-star, Maruti Zen Estilo and the new Maruti Wagon R) and a 1.2L, 4-cylinder petrol engine (loaded in Maruti Ritz, Swift and Swift Dzire).

Maruti RIII may hit Indian roads by 2012

Maruti Suzuki India, country's largest car maker is working on its plans of launching a Multi Purpose Vehicle (MPV) named as RIII, in the Indian market by year 2012. The concept model of RIII was showcased at the Delhi Auto Expo in January this year, where it attracted a large number of visitors and car enthusiasts. Maruti RIII is basically a seven seater MPV which will be produced at the platform of Maruti's only entry level sedan SX4.



The Maruti RIII concept was showcased with flowing lines at the exteriors that start from the front of the vehicle and flow to the rear. Besides this, the concept has been decorated with the concealed rear tail lamps, a glass roof and a chrome grille. The MPV will be developed with an objective of optimizing the interior space without compromising on the elegance and compactness of the exterior.

However, the company hasn't disclosed any details regarding the launch date and specifications of this model in India. The company may also plan to export this model to foreign markets like Latin America and East Europe following its launch in the Indian market.

Maruti India crosses 1 lakh unit sales mark In May 2010

Maruti Suzuki India, the country's largest car maker, has set a bench mark by selling more than 1 lakh cars in the month of May 2010. The company has managed to achieve a cumulative sales figure of 1,02,175 units including sales in both domestic and foreign markets. According to Mr Mayank Pareek, managing executive officer (Marketing & Sales) at Maruti Suzuki India, the introduction of newer models added incremental numbers and raised the tally.



The company managed to sell 90,041 units of its cars in the domestic market, jumped by 27.2 per cent over corresponding month last year. This is the highest ever domestic sales in a month. The previous highest monthly domestic sale was 84,765 units, in February 2010. The company registered highest ever domestic sales in A2, A3 and C segments respectively.

Besides Maruti, many other major car maker in the country posted a considerable increase in their May 2010 sales, Including Tata Motors, Hyundai India, Mahindra & Mahindra, Ford India, GM India and Fiat India.

Maruti enters its name in the Guinness Book of Records

Maruti Suzuki India, a major car maker in the country, announced on Sunday that it has managed to enter its name in the Guinness Book of Records by organizing the largest-ever car parade of its most popular compact hatchback Maruti Swift in India. Maruti Suzuki has set a new Guinness Book of World Record by bringing together 342 Swift cars at a car parade in Gurgaon, company said in a statement. This world record is a testimony to the ever-growing popularity of the Swift. The new record is a victory for all the 4.5 lakh Swift owners, the statement added.



The sales figures of Maruti Swift has crossed the mark of 4.5 lakh units since its launch in India five years back. The company produces over 12,000 Swifts on a monthly basis at its facilities in Gurgaon and Manesar, still, the car is enjoying a high waiting period of 2 to 3 months.



In the initial year of its launch about 61,200 units of Swift were sold in India, which was much higher then the target company had aimed for it of 50,000 units. The Swift model is among one of the most sought-after models in not only India but also in many foreign markets including Japan, Europe. In the Denmark, Swift had topped the chart in year 2006, and is among top three since then.

In the list of largest vehicle parades ever held in the world, BMW has a unique record on its name, the company had organized the largest ever parade of gathering 1,450 units of Minis in London in year 2009, at the occasion of the 50th anniversary of this BMW-owned small car.

The sales figures of Maruti Swift has crossed the mark of 4.5 lakh units since its launch in India, five years back. Still, the high demand it enjoying since last five years, is not seems to be going down, taking into consideration its long waiting period of 2 to 4 months, in India.

In the initial year of its launch about 61,200 units the Swift model were sold in India, which was much higher then the target company had aimed for it of 50,000 units. The Swift model is among one of the most sought-after models in not only India but also in many foreign markets including Japan, Europe. In the Denmark, Swift had topped the chart in year 2006, and is among top three since then.



The launch of Swift Dzire, a sedan version of Swift model, which was rolled-out in India few years back, has taken the company to a new horizon of success with acquiring the top spot in the entry-level sedan segment in the initial months of its launch in the country.

However, the almost monopoly of Maruti Swift in hatchback segment has been threaten by new entrants of this segment including Volkswagen Polo and Ford Figo. In the coming months the competition for Swift is going to be very tough as many new cars are all set to enter in this segment including Nissan Micra in July 2010 and Toyota Etios in Dec 2010.
