Bugatti Veyron Super Sport

Of all the phrases in the English language, few are likely to as accurately describe what it's like to drop the hammer on the Bugatti Veyron Super Sport as "absolutely crackers." That is if you're trying to keep things PG, at least. The crew from Autocar managed to beg, borrow and steal their way into the cockpit of what is perhaps our era's pinnacle of production automotive engineering for a quick blast through the European countryside. Fortunately enough for all of you, they were also kind enough to video the whole shebang.

Bugatti veyron Vs BMW S 1000 RR

Four-wheeled machines are as fun as motorcycles. The two-wheeled bike folks laugh at this, then scream off into the twisties at 9,000 rpm. Inside Line decided it would be fun to test two powerful examples, one car and one motorcycle. In one corner is a 2010 Bugatti Veyron while in the other sits a 2010 BMW S 1000 RR.

Bugatti Veyron obviously has the power advantage with its quad-turbo 8.0-liter W16 engine that produces 1,001 horsepower. The 190-horsepower BMW has a huge weight advantage and the agile bike can get around any Citroën-shaped obstacles that it might come across.

The staff at Inside Line give the nod to the bike, for a number of valid reasons. It makes more sense in a day-to-day atmosphere, can slip through traffic, and when the luggage rack is applied it has more cargo capacity. The S 1000 RR also gains an edge when comparing maintenance costs. Changing a tire on a bike isn't too much of a hit to the wallet, but to change the full set of rubber on the Bugatti costs $90,000. Furthermore, there are only two machines in the world capable of handling that job -- one in France and another here in the US.

Regardless of the outcome, the pair both represent unique forms of engineering excellence and the real winner of the shootout is Inside Line. Getting to spend time with either vehicle is a treat, but getting to do it on a scenic French road is a dream.

Bugatti Veyron review on Top Gear

On Top Gear the car has received considerable praise from all three presenters. Jeremy Clarkson declared the Veyron "the greatest piece of engineering ever. No, I'm sorry, this is the greatest car ever made and the greatest car we will ever see in our lifetime." James May proclaimed that the Veyron is "our Concorde moment". To review the car, Clarkson drove from Alba, northern Italy to London whilst racing James May and Richard Hammond who were travelling in a Cessna 182 aeroplane.

Bugatti Veyron Braking

The Veyron's brakes use cross drilled, radially vented carbon fibre reinforced silicon carbide (C/SiC) composite discs, manufactured by SGL Carbon, which have a much greater resistance to brake fade when compared with conventional cast iron discs. The lightweight aluminium alloy monobloc brake calipers are made by AP Racing; the fronts have eight titanium pistons and the rear calipers have six pistons. Bugatti claims maximum deceleration of 1.3 G on road tyres. As an added safety feature, in the event of brake failure, an anti-lock braking system (ABS) has also been installed on the handbrake.

Prototypes have been subjected to repeated 1.0 G braking from 312 km/h (194 mph) to 80 km/h (50 mph) without fade. With the car's acceleration from 80 km/h (50 mph) to 312 km/h (194 mph), that test can be performed every 22 seconds. At speeds above 200 km/h (120 mph), the rear wing also acts as an airbrake, snapping to a 55-degree angle in 0.4 seconds once brakes are applied, providing an additional 0.68 G (4.9 m/s²) of deceleration (equivalent to the stopping power of an ordinary hatchback).

Bugatti claims the Veyron will brake from 400 km/h (250 mph) to a standstill in less than 10 seconds, though in this time you will have covered a third of a mile.
